Man accused of leading police on chase on I-79
A Harmony man led Jackson Township Police on a high-speed chase Tuesday night on about a four-mile stretch of Interstate 79, according to charging documents.
Larry R. Priester Jr., 37, was arrested and charged the same night with felony fleeing from an officer and misdemeanor counts of vehicle registration fraud, reckless endangerment and possession of marijuana. Priester was also charged with five other summary traffic violations.
After his arrest, Priester was released on $6,000 unsecured bond.
According to charging documents, police were conducting a routine patrol around 5:30 p.m. when they spotted Priester's truck, a maroon Ford F-150 with a blue tailgate, sitting in the parking lot of Park & Ride. Documents said police had recognized Priester's truck from other encounters with him.
Police said while running the truck's registration, it came back expired from August 2019. PennDOT employees also said the license plate was only meant to be a tag and was not to be used for a motor vehicle.
Documents said police watched as a white van pulled up. Police said Priester exited the van, got into his truck and drove south on Route 528.
“As I pulled out after the Ford truck, the driver immediately accelerated and made an abrupt, non-signalled, left-hand turn onto the on-ramp of Interstate 79 southbound,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit. The I-79 ramp from Route 528 is situated at mile marker 83.
Police said they continued their pursuit onto I-79, with Priester weaving in and out of traffic and passing other vehicles. Police said he was driving well above the 70 mph speed limit, and he nearly struck multiple vehicles with his maneuvers.
Documents said Priester eventually pulled over at the entrance of a closed weigh station and rest area, which is at mile marker 79.
Police said after arresting Priester, they found his license to be suspended, and he admitted to having no insurance, registration or inspection for the truck. Documents said police also found a small amount of marijuana in the truck.
“While Priester was in custody, he made the voluntary utterance that he had 'ran' because he was scared due to a small amount of marijuana in the passenger compartment of the vehicle,” police said.
Priester's preliminary hearing has been scheduled March 30 before District Judge Wayne Seibel.
