Freeport hockey moves to 12-3
Keith Smilowitz and Caleb Hoffman scored two goals each as Freeport's varsity hockey team rolled to an 8-1 win over Fox Chapel Thursday night.
The Yellowjackets (12-3) also received goals from Logan Horvath, Addison Stewart, Marcus Trask and Cole Mitchel. Jack Mason and Trask had two assists each.
Tyler Lang stopped 21 of 22 shots on net for Freeport, which plays Blackhawk at 8:30 p.m. Monday at Pittsburgh Ice Arena in New Kensington.
Swimming
North Catholic's Brittney Carmazzi placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly Friday at the PIAA Class AA Swimming Championships. She swam the event in 58.25 seconds.
The Trojans' Matthew Littleton was seeded 13th in the 100 butterfly and barely missed medaling. He took ninth with a time of 52.58 seconds. The top eight in each event medal.
North Catholic's 200 freestyle relay team of Littleton, Jackson Kress, Zac Baker and Julian LaPietra finished 10th with a 1:30.45, besting their seed time of 1:30.70.
No other Butler County swimmers finished among the top 10. Finishing 11th were Freeport's Alexis Schrecongost in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, Moniteau's Bailey Trettel in the 100 backstroke, North Catholic's boys 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
Bowling
Butler freshman Kelsee McConnell finished ninth at the PA State Singles Championships at North Versailles Bowling Centre in Pittsburgh. She missed the championship step-ladder by 31 pins.
McConnell rolled a 224 in her state debut. She averaged better than 181 in her six games of qualifying. In four of the six games, she averaged better than 201.
Freeport's Mark Livingston placed fourth in qualifying to make the boys step-ladder portion of the tournament. He defeated the No. 5 seed before losing to the No. 3 seed.
The boys and girls state team events are Saturday at North Versailles.
