Senior pair hope to go out with a bang

Butler's Bocci, SV's Simoes seek state swimming gold in final meet

Their final high school meet affords seniors David Bocci and Daniel Simoes the chance to add an exclamation point to already impressive scholastic careers.

Bocci, of Butler High, won a WPIAL Class 3A title in the 100-yard butterfly with a school-record time earlier this month and Seneca Valley's Simoes did likewise in the 200 individual medley.

They are ranked first in the state entering Saturday's PIAA championship meet at Cumberland Valley High School.

Both reached the state meet last year, but it was suspended before its completion due to COVID-19.

Bocci's seed time is 48.94 seconds. Only Dalton Fink (49.48) of Owen J. Roberts joins him with a sub-50 time.

“We looked at the film of David's butterfly from WPIALs,” said Butler coach Dave Bocci. “David's always good in the back half of that event, but we think he can drop time in the first 25 or 50 yards.”

“I was really amped up for that event and my head was raised early in the race,” said David. “I need to keep it buried in the water.

“I'd like to get my time down to 48-low.”

He isn't shying away from the pressure that comes from being ranked first in the state; he's embracing it.

“It's a good pressure,” he said. “It's every kid's dream to be in that position, seeded first in the state. My WPIAL swim has given me confidence, but I know I will have to do better to win at states. The other swimmers are all going to drop time.”

Simoes' district title came with a time of 1:50.86. He also plans to use his top-ranking to his advantage.

“It's going to help me go even faster,” he said. “It wasn't my goal at the start of the season to win a state title, I just wanted to place in the top eight.”

Upper St. Clair's Josh Matheny is just .47 seconds behind Simoes, while third-seeded Riley Thomas of Dallastown is .95 seconds off the pace.

“He had a great swim at WPIALs and I think he's capable of getting down to 1:49 to 1:48,” said Seneca Valley coach Brian Blackwell.

“I know my turns can be better and I will be more rested for this meet,” said Simoes.
