Resident discusses sustainability program

MIDDLESEX TWP — Middlesex Township has room to grow as a community, according to resident Claire Catt.

Catt asked supervisors Wednesday night to consider fostering that growth by allowing the township to be part of a sustainability program.

“I love this community,” Catt said. “I would like to help it become better.”

Catt told supervisors one way of doing that was joining the Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification program through the Pennsylvania Municipal League.

The league is a nonprofit organization established in 1900 to advocate for Pennsylvania's third-class cities. Today, its advocacy efforts extend to local municipal governments.

The sustainability program offers different levels of certification via the completion of various checklists.

According to the league's website, this “voluntary performance recognition program” allows communities to save money and resources by encouraging innovative approaches to operations.

Communities achieve different levels of certifications by complying with criteria for points, according to Catt.

Catt said combined with the township's resources, she believes the community will be able to achieve sustainability status.

“We have a lot of heart,” Catt said. “Our citizens care.”

Catt said with the supervisors' approval, she'd work with township manager Adam Hartwig to certify the community.

Michael Spreng, supervisor chairman, said the board needs to review the program before making a decision about whether to join it.
