2 vehicle crashes send 4 to hospital
Emergency services in the north responded to two vehicle crashes that sent a combined four people to the hospital Saturday.
State police said shortly before 10 a.m., two vehicles crashed on Staff Road in Brady Township, about 25 feet north of its intersection with McCommons Lane.
Unionville firefighters arrived at the scene along with firefighters from Slippery Rock and West Sunbury departments, all of whom had just left from another vehicle accident only about a mile away.
“We were kind of clearing that one up, and we got dispatched to a second accident,” said Unionville Assistant Chief Nathan Wulff.
Wulff said both vehicles showed heavy front-end damage, and the police report noted the crash was head-on. Wulff said there was one driver in a pickup, and there were four people in an SUV.
Wulff said getting the people out of the SUV became a priority as they found that three people needed medical attention.
“By the time everything was said and done, we had to do a complete side removal,” Wulff said. “We had three helicopters land at Moraine Camplands.”
According to the police report, the unnamed, 16-year-old driver of the Chevrolet Equinox was uninjured, but all three of his passenger suffered “suspected serious injuries.”
Those transported include Jesse Dagger, 41, Michelle Macklin, 34, and a 12-year-old boy, all from Slippery Rock. The boy was taken to UPMC Children's while the adults were taken to Allegheny General Hospital.
The report also noted police have cited the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, Leon King, 54, of East Brady, with speeding. King was uninjured in the crash.
“This crash occurred on a downhill curve. Road conditions were clear and dry,” said the investigating trooper in the report.
Butler Ambulance transported the patients from the scene to the campground.
For firefighters from the three departments, it was not the first incident of the day, and it wouldn't be the last.
Wulff said there was overlap between the Staff Road accident and an earlier one, where was person also was hospitalized.
“It was weird circumstances that we had two accidents in relatively the same area in Brady Township,” Wulff said.
According to police reports, at around 9:28 a.m. two vehicles crashed on Prospect Road at its intersection with the North Country Trail.
Wulff said firefighters arrived on scene and found a T-bone-style crash. He said they had to extract the driver from a PT Cruiser.
“We just had to remove the door, and the patient was able to get out,” said Wulff.
Police said the PT Cruiser's driver, Joann Tripp, 54, of Grove City, was taken by Slippery Rock Ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital for a suspected minor injury.
Kathryn Nicholson, 68, of Oakdale was the driver of the other vehicle, a 2017 Honda CRV.
In the report, police said Nicholson pulled out in front of Tripp, trying to turn left into a parking lot from Prospect Road.
According to the report, Nicholson was charged with a traffic citation related to the crash.
Both accidents took about 90 minutes before Butler County dispatchers noted the scenes as clear.
