S. Butler considers summer school

South Butler County School District students who fell behind during the current school year may be able to catch up in the summer.

Superintendent David Foley said at Wednesday's school board meeting that while he is still discussing the idea with the district's four principals, an elementary summer school would see students attending for four weeks in the summer at the school campus.

Students would be picked up and brought to the campus, where they would eat breakfast, have one hour and 20 minutes each of reading and math and recess before returning home.

Foley said incentive programs like a field trip would be included to entice students to attend.

The summer school program would be funded through a $996,000 grant, so the district would incur no costs.

A survey will be sent to parents in the near future to get input on the program, Foley said.

The summer school program would be mainly geared toward students who need a little academic help after a disruptive year, where students learned both at home and at school due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Foley said he is currently discussing the idea with the middle school and high school principals to determine the best way to carry out a summer school program at the secondary level.

The board did not take action on the measure Wednesday night.
