CANONSBURG — A double trifecta, joined by a brother act.

Seneca Valley put on quite a show during the WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Championships Saturday at Canon-McMillan High School.

Sophomore Tyler Chappell at 106 pounds, seniors Dylan Chappell at 132 and Alejandro Herrera-Rondon at 152 all won WPIAL championships for the Raiders. The trio advances to the West Regional this Saturday in Altoona.

They will be joined by Butler junior Cooper Baxter, who rallied from an overtime loss in the semifinals to take third place at 189 pounds. The top three placers in each weight class advanced.

Tyler and Dylan Chappell are brothers.

“There haven't been a lot of brothers who have won here,” Seneca Valley coach Kevin Wildrick said. “I can't imagine brothers from Butler County have won here before.”

Dylan Chappell and Herrera-Rondon became three-time WPIAL champions. Herrera-Rondon has a career record of 169-14 — more wins than any wrestler in the tournament — while Chappell is 159-25.

“When I was a freshman, I was hoping to win one of these,” Herrera-Rondon said of a WPIAL title. “I was pretty under-sized back then. But once I won my first WPIAL, then a state title, I felt like I could be one of the best no matter what weight class.

“To win three championships with Dylan, my best friend ... we've helped each other in the room so much over the years ... this means everything.”

“Winning three is special,” Chappell said.

Chappell could only smile when thinking about winning a WPIAL title along with his younger brother.

“When we go home, we'll have something to talk about,” he said. “This is a nice accomplishment.”

Tyler Chappell scored a first-period takedown to get the lead on Plum's Antonino Walker in their title match, then clinched a 5-2 win by scoring a reversal with 22 seconds left in a tight match.

“Dylan and I both started wrestling when we were young,” Tyler said.”When I was seeded high at the Powerade tournament, I felt like I was good enough to win the WPIAL.

“The big goal is a state championship. That's what all of us want.”

His brother agreed.

“This is another step in that process,” Dylan said. “I don't mind the extra (regional) tournament. It's more matches for my senior year. That's how I look at it.”

Dylan Chappell pinned Nate Roth of Greater Latrobe 46 seconds into their semifinal match, then built a 7-2 lead on Hempfield's Briar Priest in the second period before holding on for a 7-5 decision in the finals.

Herrera-Rondon, 33-0 this season, broke a scoreless tie against Waynesburg's Rocco Welsh by scoring a reversal with 50 seconds left in the second period. He rode him out in the third to claim the title.

“That (Welsh) kid is very difficult to score on,” Wildrick said. “Alejandro wrestled a smart match. He stayed within himself and navigated the win.

“He's a confident wrestler who knows how to do that.”

All three victorious Raiders were the top seeds in their respective weight classes.

“That can be a curse sometimes,” Wildrick said. “It didn't bother those guys at all.”

Butler's Baxter took a 4-2 lead over second-seed Brayden Solar-Roscosky in the second period of their 189-pound semifinal, but surrendered a takedown in the third period and was taken down with 24 seconds left in the overtime period.

Baxter rebounded to decision Seneca Valley's Liam Volk-Klos and Greater Latrobe's Corey Boerio to take third place and extend his season.

“Cooper showed a lot of mental toughness there,” Butler coach Scott Stoner said. “It's tough losing in the semifinals. Your whole focus has to shift.”

Butler heavyweight Jake Pomykata reached the semifinals, but lost a 3-1 decision there, then got caught and pinned in the second round of consolations. Golden Tornado 152-pounder Nate McMaster was eliminated in the second round of consolations.

McMaster ended his high school career with 95 wins.

“That's pretty good for a kid we pulled out of gym class (in junior high),” Stoner said. “I'm proud of him. If this was a normal year (non-COVID), he would have hit 100 easily.”

Nick Schaukowitsch lost both of his matches at 126 for Butler.

Seneca Valley 106-pounder Connor Smith was eliminated in the second round of consolations.

Volk-Klos also fell in the second-round consolation.

Raider heavyweight Sennaca Harvey and 172-pounder Manuel Santos lost both of their matches.

Santos was pulled into the tournament when Mars section champion Keith Brubach had to pull out Friday because of a COVID-19 related issue.

Butler assistant Fred Powell was named winner of the WPIAL Assistant Wrestling Coach of the Year Award prior to the finals.
