Lame-duck politicians could be most dangerous

The same as people had a right to be concerned that former President Donald Trump might abuse the powers of the office he held as his term expired, it is time to pull in the reins on Gov. Tom Wolf.

Lame-duck politicians might be the most dangerous kind. Former POTUS Trump was being watched more carefully than at any other time during his last month in office by everyone, including the people who run the giant tech companies which may be as big a threat to the world as anything nuclear.

Legitimate fears concerning what words he may choose which could be enough to trigger violence from his most extreme followers pushed the fears and concerns to new heights.

Here in Pennsylvania, our problem didn’t go away with the 2020 election. We have another two years to bear the heavy cross, which the Wolf governorship has become. He dodged a bullet this week when Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar fell on her sword and took 100% of the blame for the blunder concerning the sexual abuse victim’s right initiative.

Wolf and Attorney General Josh Shapiro were every bit as much as fault, but only one owned up to being at fault for it. Around our place, blame goes straight to the top and then shared privately if needed. The two elected people, whom the voters entrusted to be on the job and to pay attention, let us down miserably, not just Boockvar.

Now Wolf is about to release his proposed budget, which he seems proud to say includes a huge jump in personal income taxes. That is something only a politician with no plans for elected office in the future can do.

We once had a retiring county commissioner in the 1990s give us a quote that the best thing about not running for reelection was that he could vote the way he would really want to vote.

That is what makes the governor so dangerous. He has done everything else to ruin the economy of Pennsylvania the past six years, so why not cap it off with a whopping personal income tax increase?

Young people can’t get out of Pennsylvania fast enough. Our tax base is dying because we are old and chasing away the next generation to other states that have a huge cost of living advantage versus Pennsylvania, the land of taxes.

He doesn’t have to be too cunning, since he will finally be leaving office. But as politicians love to do, he is promising to solve all the problems of education and senior citizens with these new dollars he is sucking out of the residents.

That plan has never worked before, and it won’t this time either, as it will get used instead to pay for special interests of his and the others in the great halls of Harrisburg. A big concern for the people of the commonwealth should be that his actions aren’t drawing any attention.

Have we become so beaten down by his decrees over health care that we no longer have the will to fight this abuse of power?

There is a quiet voice that will be heard from if this goes forward. It is the voice coming from boardrooms across Pennsylvania, where decisions are made to stay or relocate to more business-friendly states, which is anywhere but California and Massachusetts.

Foxes, like most animals in the wild, have very acute sense of hearing. The species living in the den in Harrisburg hasn’t listened to the needs of the people for six years, so it’s doubtful he will listen now. This fox loves to hear himself speak, but hasn’t learned the fine art of listening.

Please, as a respect for others, wear your mask.
