9:55 a.m. Thursday — Joshua M. Tierno, 36, of Butler was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a woman in his pickup truck on the 200 block of Walker Avenue.The victim told police that she and Tierno got into an argument over her dropping a lit cigarette inside his truck. While she was apparently looking for the cigarette on the floor of the rear seat, the defendant slid the front seat back, hitting her with it.According to court documents, when she cried out, he struck her again with the seat. Tierno was arraigned on a charge of simple assault and released on nonmonetary bail.

1:14 p.m. Friday — Lisa M. Coates, 56, of Butler was allegedly caught shoplifting $425.31 worth of merchandise at the Butler Commons' Walmart. She is charged with misdemeanor counts of retail theft and defiant trespass.

Jan. 5 — A Westmoreland County man was charged with having over twice the state's legal limit for alcohol stemming from a traffic stop last month on Cornish Drive. Police said Cameron J. Guercio, 21, of Irwin, was pulled over around 9:10 p.m. Dec. 31 after he ran a stop sign.Guercio was eventually taken to the Slippery Rock University police station for a breath test, according to court documents, which showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.173 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.He is charged with driving under the influence and a stop sign violation.

2:30 p.m. Thursday — No one was injured when a car driven by Adam R. Walker, 19, of Sarver, struck a sport utility vehicle at Bonniebrook and Rennick roads in Jefferson Township. Brian L. Sellers, 53, of Eau Claire, was the other driver. Police cited Walker for a stop sign violation.11:34 a.m. Thursday — An engine fan came out of an unidentified vehicle and struck an SUV traveling south on Route 19, north of Kildoo Road, in Muddy Creek Township. Samuel J. McCracken, 80, of Slippery Rock, who was driving the SUV, was not injured. The unknown driver did not stop and continued northbound on Route 19.7:11 p.m. Wednesday — A car driven by Emily M. Winters, 26, of Ellwood City, struck a deer on Route 488, east of Sechan Road, in Muddy Creek Township. She was not injured, but her car had to be towed.10:24 p.m. Jan. 15 — Blake M. Jesteadt, 23, of Slippery Rock, was arrested for drunken driving in Slippery Rock. Police later took him for a breath test, which allegedly showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.118 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.Jesteadt is charged with driving under the influence, driving without a license, driving a vehicle without insurance, disregarding traffic lanes and a rear lighting violation.Jan. 13 — Dawn M. Barnes, 33, of Portersville, was arraigned on a felony charge of theft for allegedly taking a combined $1,784 in currency from the Last Minit Mart on Route 19 last year when she worked at the store.The suspected thefts occurred on five different occasions between Aug. 22 and 27, according to court documents. Barns was placed in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bond following arraignment.Jan. 12 — Police cited Varick W. Vanistendael, 45, of Slippery Rock, for failing to leash his dog after it bit a neighbor on Smith Valley Road in Slippery Rock Township. The victim, a 68-year-old man, suffered minor bite marks to his left hand and left arm.7:57 a.m. Dec. 31 — Luke P. Montag, 22, of Butler, lost control of his pickup and struck an embankment on Route 422 east of Pleasant Valley Road in Muddy Creek Township. He was not injured, but his truck had to be towed.

7:44 p.m. Thursday — A sport utility vehicle driven by Bailen C. Huth, 23, of Kittanning, struck a deer on Route 28 north about one mile north of exit 17 in Buffalo Township, Butler County. He was not injured, but his vehicle had to be towed.

4:47 p.m. Wednesday — One person was injured in a three-vehicle wreck in Pine Township, Mercer County. The crash occurred when a car driven by Elijah J. Kadylak, 19, of Grove City, struck a vehicle driven by Martin E. Doyle, 22, of Slippery Rock, at Cranberry and George Junior roads.Kadylak's car, following the collision, spun into a sport utility vehicle driven by Sharon E. Christy, 65, of Grove City, and Doyle's vehicle ended in a field. Kadylak's passenger, a 17-year-old Grove City boy, suffered an apparent minor injury. No one else was injured. Police cited Kadylak for a stop sign violation.
