Route 8 thrift store reopens

The Salvation Army Thrift Store on Route 8 in Center Township is open again after a brief hiatus.

The store was closed for 10 days for coronavirus-related precautions before reopening Monday, said Martina O'Leary, administrator for business, who oversees the Salvation Army Rehabilitation Center in Pittsburgh.

“We had an associate who had an outside contact with COVID-19,” O'Leary said on Tuesday. “Out of an abundance of caution, we closed and made sure that everybody was fine, and then we reopened.

“We wanted to make sure our staff and customers were safe.”

She declined to comment on the employee, citing privacy reasons. But the store got the OK to reopen.

The popular thrift stores fund the charitable organization's adult rehabilitation centers, which provide free assistance and services to individuals struggling with substance abuse and other issues.

The stores, which are open to the public, offer second-hand goods such as clothing, household items, furniture and linen at a discounted price.

The Salvation Army Rehabilitation Center in Pittsburgh oversees nine thrift stores in the region, O'Leary said, which encompasses a 50-mile radius of Pittsburgh.
