Perfect Storm
BUTLER TWP — Offensive struggles? What offensive struggles?
At least for one night, Butler put them to rest.
The Golden Tornado shot 62 percent (23 of 37) from the field as they blitzed visiting Seneca Valley 66-36 in girls basketball play Monday night.
Butler (2-3, 2-2) was averaging just over 41 points per game entering the contest.
“Every season, there's one or two games where everything seems to go right,” said Butler coach Mark Maier. “Tonight was one of those games. We played very well and remained composed.”
The Tornado's dominance was evident early on. They withstood three treys from SV's Olivia West in the first two minutes of the game and received baskets from five different players before leading 26-13 entering the second period.
The 26 points were as many as Butler managed in the entire game in a loss to Norwin last Thursday.
“Seneca Valley was playing a zone,” Maier said. “You miss a few shots against a zone and you start thinking maybe you shouldn't shoot, just pass it. But we hit a few (treys) early and that loosened up the defense.”
Junior Makenna Maier scored 10 of her team-leading 17 points in the second quarter and by halftime, Butler's lead had swelled to 44-21. Thirteen turnovers in the first half kept the Raiders from finding any rhythm.
SV's previous game was against North Allegheny last Thursday. The Raiders led by as many as eight points in the third quarter before falling to the Tigers.
“That effort (despite the loss) and this effort tonight, it was like two different teams,” said Raiders' coach Dorothea Epps. “We were unfocused tonight and totally rattled.”
Along with Maier, Butler featured two other players who scored in double figures — Alison Altman with 15 and Aubree Tack with 14.
Tack contributed eight points to Butler's surge in the first period. Her night also included four assists and four steals.
“We played really well as a team tonight,” said Tack, who was confident a big night awaited the Tornado. “We made the extra pass and that was key.”
West scored 20 points to lead all scorers, but the rest of the team combined to score just 16 for the Raiders
Jaden Davinsizer added seven points in defeat.
“We were trying to find that other piece tonight, someone else to step up and score, but it wasn't there,” said Epps.
Maier hopes Butler's victory is a sign of things to come.
“We're not going to shoot this well every game, but we still need to sustain the effort we showed tonight,” he said.
