Butler man jailed for assault, resisting arrest

William Shaner

Butler police said they used stun guns on a wanted man and arrested him Friday after he refused to surrender to officers at his home.

William E. Shaner, 33, is in the Butler County Prison on charges in two separate cases. He is being held on $75,000 bond.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., city officers went to Shaner's house on East Christie Street with an arrest warrant for him in connection with a domestic dispute last year.

Police had gotten the warrant after the defendant allegedly assaulted his mother Oct. 19 at the home they share. He is accused of punching and kicking the victim, leaving her with injuries that included bruises on her arms and right leg.

On Friday, officers ordered Shaner to open the door and surrender on the warrant that charged him with misdemeanor assault in the earlier domestic violence incident. He refused, police said.

The officers forced open the front door and saw the suspect at the top of the steps, according to charging documents. Police approached him while ordering him several times to place his hands on his head.

When he refused, police said, two officers deployed their Tasers, causing Shaner to drop to the floor. Police had to activate their Tasers several more times, documents said, after the defendant continued to refuse to comply with officers.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Shaner on a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest in Friday's incident. She also arraigned him on a charge of simple assault stemming from the warrant.
