Mars man shoots self in Miss. police altercation
A man from Mars survived shooting himself during a struggle with police in Mississippi, according to police.
The Hernando (Miss.) Police Department issued a news release related to the Tuesday morning arrest of Samuel J. Hugg, 28.
Hugg has been charged with child enticement, resisting arrest, disobeying an officer, aggravated assault on an officer and child pornography.
He was placed in Desoto County Adult Detention Facility in lieu of $225,000 bond.
Police said they pulled Hugg over Tuesday around 8:30 a.m. after investigators posing as a 13-year-old girl had been talking to Hugg for several days.
Police said Hugg intended to meet the “girl” for sex.
According to reports, Hugg resisted arrest and fought officers.
“While struggling with officers, the suspect drew a firearm from his side and fired one round,” said police in their statement. “The single round struck the suspect across his chest.”
Police said after getting Hugg in handcuffs, he was taken to and treated at a hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
