Evans City garage fire kept at bay

Local fire departments contained a fire to a garage at the end of Grandview Avenue off Hill Street on Monday evening in Evans City. A neighboring house did not sustain any major damage. No injuries were reported at the scene.

EVANS CITY — An early evening garage fire was effectively extinguished before it caused severe damage to a neighboring Evans City house Monday.

Several local emergency agencies responded to the scene after a call to 911 was made about 4:20 p.m.

The initial call limited the fire to Hill Street, though a house number wasn't immediately available.

“They saw smoke in the area,” said Matt Otto, fire chief of the Evans City Volunteer Fire Department. “The neighbors came out yelling.”

Eventually, the smoke was narrowed down to a one-story garage at the end of Grandview Avenue off of Hill Street. Fire crews attached hoses to a fire hydrant about 900 feet away to fight the flames.

“It definitely hindered everything,” Otto said. “(But) we were able to contain the fire at least to the garage.”

Otto said though no one was in the garage at the time of the fire, the property owners were in the vicinity. One of them had been working in the garage earlier in the day, according to Otto.

The garage was still standing after the fire was extinguished, though an estimation of exact damages wasn't immediately available.

Otto said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Harmony EMS responded. No injuries were reported at the scene.

Aside from the Evans City Volunteer Fire Department, emergency crews from Adams, Cranberry, Callery and Harmony also responded.
