Pirates hire Baker for player development

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have named John Baker their Director of Coaching & Player Development, general manager Ben Cherington has announced.

Baker, 39, spent the last five years working in Baseball Operations for the Chicago Cubs.

The former catcher spent seven seasons in the major leagues with the Marlins, Padres and Cubs, hitting .247 with 14 home runs in 359 games.
