Package causes brief scare at gov't center

A suspicious package received Saturday in the Butler County Government Center did not pose a public threat.

“There was a suspicious package. They had it checked out and they took it,” County Commissioner Kevin Boozel said.

The package was removed after Aaron Sheasley, director of the county election bureau, and deputy sheriffs discovered the package, Boozel said.

He said he did not believe the package contained anything dangerous, but he couldn't provide further information, saying it is under investigation.

FBI agents responded and were assisted by state and local law enforcement officials, said Catherine Policicchio, of the FBI's Pittsburgh field office.

“The situation has been resolved. After a full assessment, we determined there was no threat to the public,” Policicchio said.

Butler City police were at the scene. Butler Bureau of Fire officials said the department was not dispatched.
