New foe coming to town

Blackhawk to play Butler Friday night

BUTLER TWP — From no game to an intra-squad game to a new game ... it was a wacky Wednesday for the Butler varsity football team.

The Golden Tornado (0-4) were scheduled to host Erie at 7 p.m. Friday at Art Bernardi Stadium, but that game has been postponed until Oct. 30 due to COVID-19 concerns involving the Royals.

“They have a possible COVID situation,” Butler coach Eric Christy said. “They still haven't gotten the test results back and they haven't been able to practice all week.

“At this point, they weren't going to be ready, so we pushed the game back.”

Christy had decided to put his team through an intra-squad game Friday night “because I wasn't going to let us sit idle for two straight weeks.”

Butler's scheduled game at McDowell last week was cancelled because of COVID-19 concerns.

Christy and a couple of Butler assistant coaches are friends with New Castle head coach Joe Cowart. New Castle hasn't been in school all week because of COVID.

The Red Hurricane were scheduled to host Blackhawk this Friday, but had to cancel that game. Christy informed Butler athletic director Bill Mylan of that situation.

The Cougars (2-3) are now coming to Butler for a 7 p.m. game Friday.

“I called Blackhawk and we put this game together,” Mylan said. “It's important we get our kids a chance to play as many games as possible. I'm glad it worked out.”

Blackhawk is a Class 4A team and a member of the WPIAL's Parkway Conference. Third-year head coach Zack Hayward was quarterback of the 2008 Blackhawk team that played in the WPIAL title game at Heinz Field.

Hayward is 19-10 at Blackhawk, including WPIAL semifinal appearances each of the past two years.

“We don't know much about each other at all,” Christy admitted. “I don't even know if we'll get a chance to exchange film.

“We'll just go out there, do what we do, probably feel each other out for a quarter ... it will be like a boxing match.”

Carson Davidson, a junior, is a returning starting quarterback for Blackhawk. He's thrown for 452 yards. Running back Josh Hathaway is the Cougars' leading rusgher with 115 yards.

Carson Heckathorn is a 6-foot-4 receiver and one of Davidson's prime targets. Logan Calior has nine catches for 85 yards on the year,

Blackhawk's wins are against Ambridge and Beaver, who are a combined 1-8. The Cougars are coming off losses of 34-8 to Montour and 41-14 to Chartiers Valley.

Butler has not played Blackhawk in football since 1981. The Tornado are 6-1 in the series between the teams.
