Knoch girls repeat title

Gabby Kutchma (408) and Bailey Royhab (410) lead a pack of Seneca Valley girls cross country runners in the first heat of Tuesday's home meet. Kutchma won the girls race.
Win section cross country crown: Seneca Valley cruises to victories

It was a big day for the Knoch boys and girls cross country teams.

With wins over Freeport and Riverview, the Knights' girls wrapped up their second consecutive section championship.

“It's pretty special,” said Knoch boys and girls cross country coach Wess Brahler. “Our girls work so hard. This was our goal coming in and they stayed focused through a lot of challenges. They are very resilient and deserved what they accomplished.”

Elyse Chess won the girls race for Knoch with a time of 20 minutes, 24 seconds.

The Knights (11-0, 10-0) took four of the top five places.

On the boys side, Mike Formica broke the Knoch school record with a time of 16:17.

He broke the previous mark of 16:32, which was set by Max Freyermuth in 2016.

Knoch (8-2, 7-2) beat Freeport and Shady Side Academy, but fell to Riverview, which secured the section title.

Mars sophomore Blake Bertolo carded a 76 to tie for seventh place at the WPIAL Class 3A individual golf championship at South Hills Country Club.The effort earns him a spot in the state final later this month in York.Moon senior Justin Scally won the WPIAL championship with a two-under-par 69.

Aslyn Pry had four aces and 10 kills to lead Moniteau to a 3-0 win over Venango Catholic. Scores were 25-10, 25-11, 25-10.Emily Zang had six aces, Logan Barnhart five aces, three kills and 20 assists, Ciona dePrano an ace and five kills for the Warriors.<b>Hempfield 3, Butler 2 —</b> Taylor Welter had 19 kills and Maisy Gibson eight kills for the Golden Tornado (1-6).
