Krug's 6 TD passes hurt Moniteau
CHERRY TWP — Moniteau's fight against a high-powered Brookville offense ended in defeat at home Friday night.
Brookville won, 47-14, largely through quarterback Jack Krug and his receiving corps.
Moniteau fell to 1-3, while Brookville improved to 4-0.
“Their passing game is good, and that No. 6 (Krug) had a great game,” said Moniteau coach Bob Rottman.
Krug completed 17 of his 21 pass attempts for 345 yards and six passing touchdowns.
“He's very talented,” said Brookville coach Scott Park. “He's able to command the offense pretty well.”
Krug spread the ball around to four different receivers. Robert Keth, Kyle MacBeth and Brayden Kunsleman all recorded two touchdown receptions each.
Kunsleman also returned a fumble recovery 53 yards for a touchdown.
“We have 14 seniors,” Park said. “We are very blessed.”
Despite the lopsided final score, there were moments where the Warriors threatened Brookville. Twice in the first half, Moniteau reached the Raiders' 10-yard line.
The first was early in the first quarter and the drive ended with a fumble. The other deep drive ended when the Warriors turned the ball over on downs.
“We shot ourselves in the foot there a couple of times,” Rottman said. “But aside from all the negative stuff, I thought that my guys played hard with a lot of effort.”
Moniteau produced 247 rushing yards between three running backs — Mason Mershimer with 169, Charles McGuire 41 and JD Dessicin 37.
Mershimer and Dessicino both found the end zone for the Warriors' two scores.
Rottman commended the line for opening lanes and the running backs for their production after contact, especially Mershimer, who extended multiple plays by staying on his feet.
“Mason gives you 100 percent effort on every play. He makes good cuts and runs down hill,” Rottman said. “You can't say enough about the kid's effort and his heart in getting every inch that he can get.”
Park said he also took note of the physical nature of Moniteau's team. He said there were moments in the first half where he thought his team looked caught off-guard by the Warriors' physical play.
“When you come down here, you know Moniteau is physical and tough,” Park said.
But ultimately, the Brookville coach said he trusted in the film study and game plan the team had coming in. He said he knew his players would adjust to the physicality, and their game plan led to another win and another notch in their undefeated belt.
