Tornado, Ramblers in Round 2
This is one in a series of articles previewing Butler County high school football matchups this Friday.BUTLER TWP — Let the rematches begin.Butler (0-3) hosts Cathedral Prep (2-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Art Bernardi Stadium as the second half of the abbreviated 2020 schedule begins. The Golden Tornado have played Cathedral Prep, McDowell and Erie High School thus far. Now they begin playing each one of them again.“Nothing is normal for anybody this season,” Cathedral Prep coach Mike Mischler said. “Since there's only three teams in our region, we've seen Butler three times and they've seen us three times.“We've gotten to know each other pretty well.”Butler coach Eric Christy agreed.“I imagine both teams will be mixing things up a bit, throw a wrinkle in there,” Christy said. The Ramblers' 55-21 win over the Golden Tornado in the season opener evened the all-time series between the teams at 3. Jaheim Williams, who rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns in that game, has played sparingly since.Williams tweaked an ankle in that game “and has only played four or five series the past two weeks,” Mischler said. “I'm not sure about his availability for this week.”Michael Parks will be in the Cathedral Prep backfield, however. He rushed for 108 yards against Butler in the opener and has 460 yards on the ground trough three games overall.Quarterback Tamar Sample has completed only 23 passes for 287 yards, but has connected with eight different receivers. He's also run for 168 yards and two scores.Sample completed only three of 12 passes against Butler in the opener.“Tamar has done a good job,” Mischler said. “He needs to get more help from his receivers. We've dropped a number of passes.”“That team has a lot of speed, including the quarterback,” Christy said. “We need to do a better job of containing him this time. He hurt us with his feet in that last game.”Linebacker Evan Orloski leads the Tornado with 29 tackles, but injured a knee Saturday night and will not be available this week. Antonio Harris figures to replace Orloski in the lineup.“We'll have to adjust some personnel to account for not having Evan out there,” Christy said. “He's been all over the field making tackles. We're gonna miss him.”Jake Pomykata, a guard, was named Butler's Offensive Lineman of the Week for his perfiormance against Erie.“He made a lot of great blocks,” Christy said.Butler quarterback Cooper Baxter threw for 121 yards and ran for 125 against the Ramblers in the first game. He has not approached those numbers since.Baxter has thrown for 266 yards and rushed for 238, accounting for five touchdowns on the year. Justin Kabay has 124 yards rushing. Kabay is averaging 5.4 yards per carry, Julian Jones 9.6 and Byron Manchester 5.7.“Butler threw a lot of looks at us last time and was effective moving the ball,” Mischler said.Cathedral Prep is coming off a 24-10 loss to rival McDowell, its first loss to McDowell in nine years.“Big losses always motivate us,” Mischler said. “We've come back to win state championships after big losses in the regular season before.“We''ll be coming to play. Our guys are hungry to bounce back from that game.”
