Deadly Duo
JACKSON TWP — Two heads are always better than one.
The Seneca Valley running back duo of Ethan West and Nolan Dworek combined for 325 yards and five touchdowns Friday night as the Raiders defeated Norwin, 35-3, at home in a Class 6A Quad County Conference battle.
“That's just our gameplan, get those two guys rolling,” Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle said. “They both run really hard. But that's also our offensive line working really hard and also the receivers down field making blocks.”
West, a senior, ran for 225 yards on 25 carries and three touchdowns, while Dworek, a junior, had 100 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns.
After a scoreless first quarter, Cole Mrkonja came up with a red zone interception for the Raiders, which was followed up by West's first touchdown of the day from 51 yards out.
“We had a couple of big turnovers,” Butschle said. “They broke off a couple big runs and got into our red zone. Mrkonja and Josh Miller both with interceptions was big.”
For the Knights, running back Dom Barca was able to find a few holes in the Raider defense, with two 52-yard runs, helping him to 137 yards on 10 carries.
“Dom has now shown in three games that he can do some nice things for us,” Norwin coach Dave Brozeski said. “We still need to work on our ability to block for him. This game doesn't change, it's always going to be about blocking and tackling.”
In the second half, SV picked up right where it left off, as West picked up his third score of the day early in the third, while Dworek found the end zone twice to help secure a 32-point victory to move to 2-0 on the season.
“We knew they were going to run the ball,” Brozeski said. “First we need to wrap up the runner, but you got to give them credit, those guys are very physical runners.”
Although the game was all but put away, the Raiders did find themselves in a bit of a penalty frenzy, with multiple personal fouls late in the fourth quarter.
“I told them we physically dominated the entire game,” Butschle said. “Some of the shine of that play gets taken away when you have personal fouls and unsportsmanlike penalties at the end of a game. That's just not who we are.”
Next week SV will play host to an always tough Central Catholic.
“It's always a big game with Central,” Butschle said. “Our thought process is we want to go 1-0 each week. After this weekend we forget about this game and we work on Central.”
