Brookville hangs rough 44-0 defeat on Karns City
BROOKVILLE — Friday's football clash between Karns City and Brookville received top billing in a meeting between0 2-0 teams.
But the Gremlins were left to pick up the pieces after a 44-0 thrashing at the hands of the host Raiders.
Karns City's formidable ground attack was held to just 47 yards on 25 attempts. The team's inability to run the ball was lethal as Brookville senior star quarterback Jack Krug had ample opportunities to pass and he did so for 276 yards and four touchdowns.
“We had a good week of practice and felt we could control the line of scrimmage better than we did,” said KC coach Joe Sherwin. “Credit Brookville because they dominated up front and it's tough to get the running game going when that happens.”
On the game's opening drive, Krug led the Raiders on an 11-play, 70-yard march that was capped when he hit Kyle MacBeth on a short out-route and the latter turned upfield and raced into the end zone for a 6-0 lead two and a half minutes into the game.
KC's offense could not answer, going three and out.
“I think we didn't play that bad on defense in the first half, but we gave them the ball a lot with a short field,” said Sherwin.
Krug's second scoring pass came early in the second quarter, this one going for 16 yards to Robert Keth.
The pace of the game had been set and the Gremlins could not keep up.
Quarterbacks Eric Booher and Brayden Christie combined to complete one of eight passes in the first half. The one completion came from Christie on a fake punt that ended up four yards short of a first down in the second quarter.
By halftime, the Raiders led 25-0 and KC had been held to just 30 yards of offense.
“Their strength offensively is running the ball,” Brookville coach Scott Park said of the Gremlins. “Our strength on defense is in the middle, so it was strength vs. strength.
“I am confident in my team, but I am surprised at this final score. The Karns City team we saw on film is not the same one we faced tonight.”
The Raiders (3-0) intercepted six passes, three each off Booher and Christie.
Two of Krug's touchdown passes went to Brayden Kunselman, who finished the game with 105 yards on eight catches.
“Jack reads defenses well and he can run,” said Park. “He's a leader and the guys believe in him.”
Karns City (2-1) visits Punxsutawney next Friday.
“I thought we were ready for this game and we obviously weren't and that's on me,” said Sherwin. “We need to fix some things and keep getting better.”
