QB battle on tap
This is one in a series of articles previewing Butler County high school football matchups this weekend.Hickory football coach Bill Dungee had to check his notes.William Mokel is only a sophomore?“It all starts with their sophomore quarterback,” Dungee said of Mokel, who just two games into his Slippery Rock career is already turning heads. “I was pleasantly surprised when I saw him. He has good pocket presence, has nice zip on the ball, especially on shorter routes, and he makes correct reads — he hit a couple of touchdown passes against the (Sharon) Tigers down the seam.“He has us worried, for sure,” Dungee added.Mokel has already thrown for 444 yards this season and he figures to add a few crooked numbers to that total when the Rockets host Hickory at 7 p.m. Saturday night.“He has people around him making plays,” Dungee said of Mokel, who carries the apt nickname of “Zip.”“Last year with (Vito) Pilosi, they were more of a power team,” Dungee said. “But (Mokel) can run, too. He can move the pocket.”Hickory also has a quarterback who can move the pocket and put up gaudy numbers in Michael Henwood. All the senior has done in the first two weeks is throw for 475 yards and five touchdowns and run 136 yards and four more scores for the 2-0 Hornets.“Henwood is really good,” said Slippery Rock coach Larry Wendereusz. “We saw his speed two years ago at our place when he almost ran down one of our players who got off to a pretty good head start. He's only gotten faster. His touch on his throws is much better. He's definitely a dual-threat kids that we're going to have to try our best to keep in the pocket.”Easier said than done.“You want to make him step up in the pocket,” Wendereusz said. “That's much easier said on (Tuesday) than it is on a Friday or Saturday night.”Hickory has rolled up 89 points in the first two weeks, including a 48-16 win over rival Sharon last week. The Hornets, though, scored 41 of those points in the second half after a sluggish and sloppy first two quarters.“(Henwood) is a student of the game,” Dungee said. “He watches film of every opponent. He'll be the first to say he didn't do a very good job in the first half against the Tigers. The great ones respond and he went crazy in the second half.”Slippery Rock hopes to keep Henwood from going crazy in any half this week.Last week against Grove City, the Rockets faded in the second half in a 34-21 loss.“I take the blame for that one,” Wendereusz said. “We weren't ready for their speed and by speed I mean speed of running their plays back-to-back-to-back. We did not do a good job prepping for that and that's on me.”Slippery Rock (1-1) can also play fast. The Rockets are 73 plays last week and rolled up 23 first downs.Hickory leads the all-time series 20-10, including a 42-21 win last year.Slippery Rock beat the Hornets 28-17 in 2019.“Their defensive coordinator, Eli Christy, I think is one of the best around,” Dungee said. “Every time we go up against his defense, it's a challenge.“I'm happy with our start, but I don't think we've played our best football yet,” Dungee added. “It's nice to have things to work on and still be 2-0, though.”
