Mars facing test
The Mars football team's defense passed a stiff test last week with flying colors.
The Planets are now preparing for another one.
They held a potent Highlands offense to just a single score in Week 2 while defeating the Golden Rams 12-7. This week, it's Plum that presents a formidable challenge.
The Mustangs' versatile attack is a big reason for the team's first 2-0 start since 2015. Plum defeated Greensburg Salem 36-13 before dispatching Indiana 48-10 last week.
Senior quarterback Ryan Hubner has totaled 364 yards with four touchdowns and just one interception. Junior receiver Logan Brooks has caught nine passes for 258 yards and four scores.
Sophomore Eryck Moore paces the ground game with 174 yards and four touchdowns.
“Plum has a bigger and more physical offensive line than Highlands has,” said Mars coach Scott Heinauer. “Highlands passes the ball, I'd say 70 percent of the time. Plum is 50/50 between run and pass. (Hubner) is poised and disciplined.”
Hubner has contributed 96 yards and one touchdown to Plum's rushing stats.
He started four games last season due to an injured teammate.
“He's an athletic quarterback and is making good decisions,” said veteran Plum coach Matt Morgan. “His running ability brings an added dimension to our offense.”
Mars' defense returned just two starters from last year's team — linebackers Ben Chizmar and Teddy Ruffner — but an effort like the one the unit turned in last week can only build confidence.
Defensive lineman Logan Santa recovered a Highlands fumble late in the game, setting up the Planets' game-winning scoring drive.
“Against Hampton the first game, we gave up a lot of yards (in a 35-13 win),” said Heinauer. “I think we played better as a unit last week and did a good job of limiting their opportunities in the passing game.”
Defensively, Morgan knows his team must gang tackle fullback Teddy Ruffner, who has already rushed for 348 yards and five touchdowns.
“We've done well against the run so far, except one play against Indiana, their kid was held up and broke free for an 80-yard touchdown.
“We know it's a tall order in front of us.”
