School, store each coping with COVID-19 exposure
A student at Chicora Elementary School in the Karns City Area School District who tested positive for COVID-19 is recovering and expected to return to school next week along with other classmates who were in contact with the student.
The student was last in school Sept. 15 and tested positive Sept. 16, said Superintendent Eric Ritzert.
After the state Department of Health notified the district of the positive test Monday, contact tracing was performed and identified other students who came within 6 feet of the student for 15 minutes or more. None of those students showed symptoms, but will remain self-quarantined at home for the rest of the week, Ritzert said.
All of the students are expected to return to school Sept. 30 as long as they don't have symptoms, he said.
The student who tested positive is recovering.
“It's my understanding the student is doing well, so that's a good thing,” Ritzert said.
He said all district schools are disinfected every evening and classrooms are disinfected between classes when possible.
The Sheetz in Buffalo Township was closed after an employee tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. The employee worked that day, according to Nick Ruffner, Sheetz public relations manager. He said the store and gas pumps are being professionally deep cleaned, sanitized and disinfected before they will reopen.“We are taking an abundantly cautious approach, working with all employees who may have had close contact with this employee and exceeding all sanitization guidelines. All employees will be fully paid while this store remains closed. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this closure and will continue to prioritize the well-being of our customers and employees as we join the nation in navigating this unprecedented health crisis,” Ruffner said.
