Rivalry takes new twist
This is one in a series of articles previewing Butler County high school football matchups this weekend.A quarterback who completed 78% of his passes.Seven different receivers with a reception. An opportunistic defense. The box score looked very similar to Grove City High football coach Sam Mowrey.Only, it wasn't his team's this time. It was Slippery Rock's.“They looked really good,” Mowrey said. “They executed. They were able to make plays and find some holes in the defense. We were really impressed.”Grove City has made such accomplishments a matter of routine over the years.Slippery Rock appears to be tearing a page out of that book. The two teams will meet for the first time this season at 7 p.m. Friday at Forker Field.Rockets' coach Larry Wendereusz got just what he wanted out of first-year starting quarterback, William “Zip” Mokel last week against Sharon.Mokel was 18 of 23 for 231 yards and two touchdowns.Seven receivers had at least one catch. Five receivers had at least three.“He was very poised,” Wendereusz said. “His first couple of throws he showed his eagerness to get going, but once he got comfortable he threw the ball well, he read well, and put the ball where it needed to be.”Mowrey was also impressed.“You'd never know he was making his first start,” the coach said. But Wendereusz warned that the 27-7 win wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.His young team still made plenty of mistakes.“We were happy with the outcome, but when you watch film, we have a lot of work to do,” Wendereusz said. “That's always the part of a Week 1 game. You watch film and you have to get better. If you don't get better, teams are going to surpass you.”Grove City has its own talented quarterback in senior Logan Breese. But he had an uncharacteristic game against Hickory in a 41-21 loss, completing just 15 of 31 for 155 yards and two interceptions. The Eagles fell into a 20-0 hole.“That was a tough game,” Mowrey said. “Part of the message was we can't move on from it, we have to learn from it. You have to find things we need to do better and those things we need corrected, we need to get corrected.”Mowrey said a lot of Grove City's mistakes Friday night are correctable.“It's not like you watch the film and we're helpless and there's nothing to fix,” he said.Slippery Rock lost its last five games against Grove City, dating back to 2015.“We have to be ready for a good football team; Sam will have them ready, no doubt,” Wendereusz said. “If we're not ready and not prepared, it's not going to be a good Friday night for us.”
