Wake up, Gov. Wolf, and let fans enjoy high school games

And the stupid decisions just keep on coming.

Gov. Tom Wolf proudly announced his new declaration Wednesday stating that fans were welcome to attend high school sporting events.

That is as long as the teams don’t have many fans. He set the limit at 250 persons total. That includes players, coaches and the people necessary to have a game such as announcers, referees, the sideline officials and the school administrators.

Add them up at a school the size of Butler, even with the low number of players for a AAAA school, and you are around 100 easily. Now let’s add in some cheerleaders and the people supervising them. Of course we need a few medical professionals and the WPIAL sends observers to evaluate the level of skill of the officials. Having the full band is out of the question as Butler would have over 250 band members and the band’s support staff and directors.

Thanks for all the help, Mr. Governor. So once again the elected officials have dumped the true issues on the school districts to dig out from under and find something workable to do.

At this point there is no way to allow for parents from either team to attend, and there is certainly no room for scouts from colleges to attend and look at potential recruits.

So what can be done? Do we add in a halftime car show and get special dispensation? Is it worth asking the governor to change his mandate to allow two fan tickets for each player to give to family members? Those would have to not count against the 250.

In a football stadium you could easily spread out and socially distance, although keeping “the wave” moving might be a challenge. The pod system, which has been discussed where families could have assigned areas to remain in, has some merit.

If we aren’t going to do this right, it would be better not to do it at all.

Looking at the highlights of a high school athlete’s career is based on who was there to witness his or her finest moments. We would hate to have missed a game-winning, three-point shot of a daughter’s basketball career, the crowning of a Miss Butler County or a cheerleading performance that merits a top national ranking.

Would any of those things have been as important without parents and fans to see them happen? Surely the winners of the Carlisle Car Show were happy to win in front of their friends and family. Makes you wonder if there was a special category for the Governor’s Award.

It is time for the governor to turn to some people with some common sense and no political commitments to make better decisions.

We don’t care what party or what part of the state he represents. The problem is he doesn’t think these things through completely.

His poor and partial decisions are changing people’s and particularly kids’ lives forever. The people and especially the kids of Pennsylvania deserve better than what they are getting from this governor. Mr. Governor, wake up and start thinking beyond yesterday.
