Vision for glade run

Group asks about lake preservation plan

MIDDLESEX TWP — Members of the Glade Run Lake Conservancy board of directors attended Wednesday afternoon's supervisors work session to tell township leaders their help is available when it comes to protecting Glade Run Lake.

“It really is your biggest asset,” said Siggy Pehel, president of the conservancy. “It gives a lot of value to the community.”

Pehel said the lake property has become especially important during the pandemic, when many families have taken to the outdoors.

He asked supervisors to make the conservancy part of any “negotiations” being conducted with the developing company, Gray Hawk.

Gray Hawk was denied a planned residential development near Glade Run Lake in 2019. As previously reported by the Eagle, the development would have included 108 residential units of 50 acres along Overbrook Road. It was strongly opposed by residents.

Gray Hawk took the case to court after the development was denied. The conservancy joined the township in fighting the legal dispute earlier this year.“We're actually a team,” Pehel said. “Give us the respect of helping you as we would give you the respect of helping us.”Pehel asked specifically if the township has any long-term plan for preserving the lake property.“What's your vision?” Pehel asked.Supervisors acknowledged the conservancy's efforts and interest. But Mike Spreng, supervisors chairman, said they haven't looked into a long-term, comprehensive preservation plan.“I'm being totally honest,” Spreng said.Becky Miller, conservancy vice president, said the conservancy could assist the township in supporting the lake's future by securing surrounding property, establishing protections for “feeder streams” and educating the community about things like land trusts.Pehel suggested supervisors establish an “environmental umbrella” around the lake.“So you can protect it,” Pehel said. The conservancy was formed after the lake was drained in July 2011 due to a faulty dam. The conservancy raised funds, acquired grants, stumped for memberships and prodded elected officials until the dam was rebuilt and the lake reopened in 2017.Township officials said they can't tell property owners how to use their property, including property abutting the lake.“I think what the board struggles with is telling people what to do ... with their property,” said Mike Hnath, township solicitor.“I'll second that,” said Donald Marshall, supervisors vice chairman.Pehel said he understands that point of view. However, he hopes both entities will work toward establishing “green space” in the township.“We're on your side,” Pehel said. “What Gray Hawk has taught us is that we all need to work together for this community.”
