Fire destroys mobile home used for storage

Firefighters look for lingering hot spots from a blaze late Monday night that destroyed an unoccupied mobile home at Beaver Dam and Kiester roads in Cherry Township. No one was injured, authorities said, and the fire was not believed to be suspicious.

A late night fire Monday in Cherry Township destroyed a mobile home that was being used for storage, authorities said. No one was injured.

The blaze, which started around 11:45 p.m. at Beaver Dam and Kiester roads, was not believed to be suspicious, said Dan Bunyan, chief of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.

Damage was estimated at between $10,000 and $15,000, he said. The property was not insured.

The owners, whose names were not immediately available, live in a mobile home about 100 feet from the 14-foot-by-80-foot trailer that burned. They were home when the fire started.

“The house was fully involved when we got there,” Bunyan said. “It also caught some tall pine trees on fire.”

Due to the extent of the fire, he said, the only option for crews was a defensive attack. Engines and tankers supplied the water, and the fire was contained in 30 to 45 minutes.

The specific contents of the trailer were not known. “Just memories and storage items,” is all Bunyan could say.

A cause has not been determined, but fire officials noted that the owners between 3 and 5 p.m. or so had been burning garbage next to the trailer. The burn pile was about 30 feet from the trailer.

The state police fire marshal has been notified, but it was not immediately known if that office would investigate.

In all, between 25 and 30 firefighters from seven departments battled the blaze. The last crews did not return to their stations until around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

“We had a lot of cleanup and overhaul,” Bunyan said of the reason for being there so long. “We didn't want to be called back (for a rekindle).”

Assisting the West Sunbury VFD were firefighters from Slippery Rock, Marion Township, Harrisville, North Washington, Eau Claire and Unionville.
