Scavenger hunt highlights Zelie, Harmony history

The Harmonist Cemetery is one of the stops on the Hunt for History Scavenger Hunt in Harmony and Zelienople. The cemetery features a 150-year-old stone tablet revolving door, and the unmarked graves of 100 members of the Harmonist Society.
Booklet encourages trips to 10 local sites

The historical societies in Harmony and Zelienople have come together and devised a way to promote the history of the area even during a pandemic.

The two societies have planned the Hunt for History Scavenger Hunt, which will start Thursday and continue through Sept. 8.

This new event will take participants to historical sites all over the two towns.

“We were just trying to think what we could do as an event that would promote history and still follow social distancing,” said Rodney Gasch, president of the group Historic Harmony.

To take part in the hunt, participants need to purchase a booklet for $20 per family group of four from either the Zelienople Historical Society, 243 S. Main St., or the Harmony Museum Shop, 222 Mercer St., or online at www.harmonymuseum.org. The event will run through early September.

With booklet in hand, participants will need to visit five historical sites in Harmony and five in Zelienople and answer questions about each location. Gasch said participants should not be able to find the answers online, but will have to explore the locations to find the answer.

With all 10 questions answered, participants will be entered into a drawing for the Grand Prize Basket, a collection of donations from local businesses and each historical society.

Even if they do not win the grand prize, the historical societies have partnered with more than a dozen local businesses to include discounts in each scavenger hunt booklet.

If visiting 10 historical sites is not enough for some people, Gasch said each booklet also will include five additional locations in both Harmony and Zelienople to seek out, not for the scavenger hunt but to continue exploring historical sites in the area.

“It's a way to explore the history of these towns that are joined at the hip,” Gasch said.

Proceeds benefit the two historical societies.
