Twp. residents recycle electronics, more

Tons of TVs, other materials collected

Butler Township residents recycled 9,338 pounds of electronics and household materials during the first quarter of the year and that figure doesn’t include an unknown amount of glass bottles and jars that are recycled separately.

The quarterly report from Waste Management, the township garbage and recycling collection contractor, was reviewed at the township commissioner’s meeting Monday.

Televisions accounted for more than 2½ tons of the recycled items and other electronics made up more than 1,000 pounds, said Tom Knights, township manager.

Highlights of the quarterly report show residents recycled 5,038 pounds of TVs, 1,035 pounds of other electronics, 1,080 pounds of latex paint, 452 pounds of nonhazardous liquids and solids, 414 pounds of oil-based paint, 352 pounds of computer monitors, 283 pounds of computers, 196 pounds of printers, 83 pounds of used oil and 75 pounds of household batteries.

Those items are collected through curbside pick up, but residents who want to recycle glass must take it to a hopper at the township administration building.

The 2.25 cubic yard hopper is now being filled up every three or four days, Knights said.

It had to be emptied five times on June 27, the first day the hopper was set up.

The hopper is emptied into a larger bin provided by Dlubak Glass, which collects the glass and recycles it for a bottling company.
