[naviga:h3]Fence to protect governor’s mansion[/naviga:h3]

FRANKFORT, Ky. — A security fence will go up around the Kentucky Governor’s Mansion in response to a spring demonstration where armed protesters gathered outside the home and then hanged Gov. Andy Beshear in effigy, the governor’s office said Tuesday.

Security officials requested the fence be built after the late May protest, Beshear spokeswoman Crystal Staley said. The project’s costs won’t be known until all bids are submitted later this month, said Jill Midkiff, a spokeswoman for the state Finance and Administration Cabinet.

Demonstrators crossed barriers to reach the front porch of the mansion, “just a window pane away” from where Beshear and his wife are raising their two children, Staley said.

Protesters chanted for the governor to come outside. No one came to the door, as state troopers monitoring the rally got out of their vehicles to observe the group but not intervene, the Courier Journal reported.

The spring demonstration was billed as a rally in defense of constitutional rights, including the right to bear arms. It turned into a protest against coronavirus restrictions and Beshear’s administration.

Beshear issued a recent order requiring most Kentuckians to wear face coverings in public places.

EASTPOINTE, Mich. — A man in suburban Detroit was given the wrong lottery ticket. But there was no mistake about the result: a $2 million winner.

The Michigan Lottery said the man stopped at a gas station in Eastpointe to put air in a tire.

He needed change for the air machine and also asked for a $10 Lucky 7’s scratch-off ticket.

“The clerk handed me the $20 ticket by mistake. He offered to exchange it for me but something told me to keep it. I am sure glad I did!” the man said in a statement released Tuesday by the Lottery.

The name of the 57-year-old man wasn’t released. He decided to take a lump sum of about $1.3 million instead of $2 million spread over many years, the Lottery said.

BOTHELL, Wash. — Investigators said Tuesday they are looking into what prompted gunfire that left one police officer dead and another injured during an overnight pursuit in a Seattle suburb.

The shooting occurred after Bothell police tried to pull over a black sedan about 9:40 p.m. Monday. The driver fled, striking a pedestrian and crashing through a median before coming to a stop, the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team said in a statement Tuesday.

Gunfire was exchanged before the suspect ran off, and other responding officers found the first two shot at the scene, one fatally, the statement said.

Police searched for the suspect for almost six hours, saying they were looking for a male suspect who was armed and wearing a gray tank top and baggy sweatpants. They finally found and arrested him on a nearby rooftop where he had been hiding, they said.

The surviving officer was treated and released from Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said. The pedestrian remained in satisfactory condition Tuesday.
