Hard to smile through COVID mask protocol

The Eagle ran a story featuring comments from local restaurant owners and workers this weekend that had the opposite impact we had expected or hoped for.

The story was a direct result of Gov. Tom Wolf’s plan to shut down restaurants again, citing growing concerns with increases in the number of people testing positive for COVID-19 in Butler and neighboring counties.

However, the state backed away from its plans, most likely due to some elected officials challenging how they could be doing that based on numbers, and not do the same or even more to eastern counties in Pennsylvania where the numbers continue to be much worse.

That plan had upset food and bar industry workers who had just started to get their lives and businesses back in order.

Many were anxious to tell us how dire the situation was for them and how much of a sacrifice they had already made. Comments were made by a number of restaurants, including the local, family-owned Burger Hut.

Strong comments were accompanied by a couple of photographs, including one in which a cook was clearly not wearing a mask.

Cooking in a commercial kitchen is a very hot job. Wearing a mask makes the job nearly impossible.

We don’t know if cooking in 100-degree-plus heat is better or worse for spreading or destroying COVID-19.

It is not surprising that we don’t know because medical professionals around the world haven’t figured it out yet. Only the world-class internet doctors know for sure. They haven’t attended a day of medical school, but they know everything anyway.

We do know the primary reason full PPE wasn’t being worn had to do with a photograph being taken.

We probably should have asked — or at the very least recommended — it be worn for the photograph, but it never crossed anyone’s mind.

For that, we are sorry if it offended anyone or gave them a negative opinion of the workers or the establishment. No one asked us to explain this, but it seemed appropriate.

By coincidence, we had breakfast Friday morning in the Burger Hut 2, and as always it was outstanding.

We will go back again, and we are sure everyone will be more conscious of whatever rules are being enforced at the time — and we will follow them.
