Adams continues to plan events despite COVID-19

Destination playground almost ready

ADAMS TWP — Township officials are continuing to develop community entertainment and events, despite an uncertain future with COVID-19.

Haley Geyer, parks and recreation director, told supervisors Monday night that her department is looking as far ahead as the fall — although still taking things one day at a time.

“We're just playing everything by ear right now,” Geyer said. “We're going to see.”

Specifically, Geyer said her parks and recreation planners are looking into organizing a car cruise in September and a fall pet parade.

“That's still, hopefully, being planned,” Geyer said.

Future events might not be set in stone. But several township recreational amenities are being put to use now.

“We do have a lot going on at the park,” Geyer said. “Our sports associations have been operating fully.”

Geyer said local baseball, lacrosse and soccer teams have been using township fields. The Mars Public Library made use of township property last week, according to Geyer. She said library organizers established a story trail that helped residents get outside while engaging in reading.

The community destination playground continues to be developed too.

“We just had part of the destination playground (concrete) pad poured,” Geyer said. “That area that was poured last week is going to be used for benches and tables.”

Geyer said this will provide places for guardians to watch their kids play.

Although the destination playground was partially open a few days last month, it isn't fully open at this time. Supervisor Chairman Russell Ford said the township is waiting for the project contractor to finish concrete work and finalize ADA-compliant elements.

“Everything else has been completed,” Ford said. “I know the kids are chomping … at the bit to get on that playground.”

Clay Morrow, supervisor, asked if it's possible for the playground to be opened without the ADA sidewalks being ready. Township solicitor Michael Gallagher said he believes such an opening would be acceptable if the sidewalk was pending.

“That's your call,” Gallagher said.

“If we're going to be delayed much longer than another week or two, (then) yes, I believe we need to get it open,” Ford said.

Geyer said she hopes the project will be finished over the next few weeks.

“We're working as fast as possible on it,” Geyer said.
