Owners douse garage fire

Evans City volunteer firefighters inspect the damage to an attached garage at a house on the 900 block of Brownsdale Road in Forward Township. The homeowners were able to put out the fire with a garden house and extinguisher, minimizing damage. No one was injured.

FORWARD TWP — Homeowners used a hose and extinguisher to put out a fire Sunday evening inside an attached garage at their house on the 900 block of Brownsdale Road, authorities said. No one was injured.

The fire about 5:40 p.m. is not believed to be suspicious, said Matt Otto, chief of the Evans City Volunteer Fire Department. The state police fire marshal has been notified, but it was not immediately known if that office would investigate.

The ranch-style house is under renovation and the homeowners, whose names were not available, had just moved in from Zelienople last week, Otto said.

The owners left the house about 2:30 p.m. Sunday. When they returned, they discovered the fire.

“They opened the garage door,” Otto said, “and there was smoke coming out.”

The smoke and fire were around the right corner of the garage, where empty boxes and end tables were stored. The owners grabbed a garden hose and fire extinguisher and put out the fire

“When I pulled up on scene,” Otto said, “everything was already out inside.”

Crews deployed a thermal-imaging camera to make sure the fire had not extended into the interior of the house. The only visible damage, which was minor, was to drywall and soffit in the garage. Damage was estimated at $1,000. The property was insured.

After some ventilation of the house, the family was able to return to the home. Otto said the owners would likely have to hire a contractor to check for any electrical damage.

The Callery VFD and Adams Area Fire District assisted at the scene.
