Man hurt in Mars house fire

A two-alarm fire Thursday night in Mars sent one man to a Pittsburgh hospital.

The blaze, which started around 10 p.m. on the first floor of the residence, sent heavy flames shooting from the three-story building in the 300 block of North Garfield Avenue.

The only occupant of the house, a man, was taken to UPMC Passavant-Cranberry and later flown to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh with undisclosed injuries.

Adams Area Fire District was the first to respond to the fire and help from local agencies in the Standard Actions for Emergency Response group was quickly requested.

Adams Assistant Fire Chief Al Minjock said it took about an hour of heavy work to extinguish the fire, but responders were on scene for nearly six hours investigating.

Underneath the house is a garage that once served as a commercial operation, Minjock said, and there appeared to be an active vinyl printing shop on or near the scene.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. The state police fire marshal is investigating.
