Driver charged in Callery crash that injured bicyclist
Two weeks after a bicyclist was seriously injured in a collision with a sport utility vehicle at a Callery intersection, police have cited the SUV driver with a traffic violation.
Police on Monday cited William A. Ludwig, 62, of Evans City, with a stop-sign violation in connection with the crash around 12:40 p.m. June 13.
According to a police report released Tuesday, Ludwig was traveling from Kline Avenue to Marburger Road when his GMC Acadia collided with the bicycle that Gregory F. Reed, 56, of Adams Township, was riding on Mars Evans City Road.
The front of the bike struck the vehicle's driver's side. Other motorists stopped to help Reed, who was wearing a helmet.
Authorities said Reed was “in and out” of consciousness when emergency crews found him following the crash around 12:40 p.m. at Mars Evans City and Marburger roads, authorities said.
He was flown by STAT MedEvac helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh, where he underwent surgery for injuries that police described as “serious.” His condition Tuesday was unavailable.
Ludwig suffered a minor injury. An ambulance crew tended to him at the scene, but he refused transport to a hospital.
The SUV sustained heavy side damage and had to be towed.
Police conducted an accident reconstruction investigation following the crash, which closed the road for several hours.
Adams Township police were first at the scene. The Callery Volunteer Fire Department, Quality Ambulance and Cranberry EMS also assisted state police.
