Weekend accidents injure two kids, adult
Emergency crews were busy Saturday responding to accidents in Center and Clay townships that left three people, including two children, injured and in need of hospital attention.
A 3-year-old girl suffered burns about 6:30 p.m. when she fell into a fire pit at her family's home on Beacon Lane in Center Township, authorities said.
A medical helicopter flew the child to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh with reported second- or third-degree burns from her neck to the buttocks and possibly one or both legs, according to emergency crews.
Her condition Sunday was not available.
Butler Ambulance Service and the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the medical call. State police also were called to investigate.
Police said the family was having a birthday party at the home with about 10 people. There was a brick ring fire pit — about 3 or 4 feet in diameter — in back of the home.
The girl was running near the pit when she tripped and fell into the fire. Others there were close by and immediately pulled her to safety.
“It was just a freak accident,” said Trooper Richard Giustini.
Crews said the girl was conscious but in pain when they arrived. An ambulance took her to the nearby Unionville fire station at Route 8 and Mahood Road in Center Township, where the STAT MedEvac helicopter landed before flying her to the hospital.
Dirt bike crash
In another accident Saturday involving a child, a 17-year-old boy was apparently knocked unconscious about 1:40 p.m. when he crashed a dirt bike at the Switchbackmx racetrack along Route 8 in Clay Township.
“He was coming out of a jump and landed wrong,” said Dan Bunyan, chief of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.
The boy, who was wearing a helmet, had regained consciousness by the time rescuers got there. He tried to refuse medical treatment, authorities said, but due to his injury he was taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital to be evaluated.
Tree limb falls
A man was injured shortly before 5 p.m. when a tree limb landed on him on Route 308 in Center Township. An ambulance took him to Butler Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries. No other information was available.
