Treating workers fairly, equally — is good business

Nothing is certain in this world except change.

We live in a much different world than our parents, known as the Greatest Generation, ever did. What we once thought we knew, we now know not to be true at all.

Some of the changes taking place may or may not be what we as individuals may like or deem appropriate. But if the changes are making things more fair for all people, then how can it be wrong?

On Monday, the United States Supreme Court ruled that LGBT workers have the same protections from sex discrimination as all other people.

Simply put, all persons are to be treated fairly, regardless of their sexual orientation.

This ruling takes on special meaning in light of Justice Neil Gorsuch, a Supreme Court appointee of President Donald Trump who cast one of the votes in favor of passing this legislation.

Gorsuch stated that “an employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex.”

Loosely translated, the employer wasn’t treating everybody fairly.

We hope this isn’t looked at as a defeat for the Trump administration or a victory for some other political faction, but rather as one more step toward equality and fairness to all people.

Isn’t it time we grew up and got past the idea that some people are less equal based on anything?

As to the loss for businesses or employers — why are we even talking about it? Why would these people not be treated fairly even if they are orange and green and have three ears? They are still people.

If they are doing the job they were hired to do, then great.

If they are not doing the job to the specified requirements, then dismiss them for that reason and that reason alone.

Every employer we talk to is complaining about how hard it is to find and hire good employees. We hear that people just don’t want to work.

Here, you have people willing and able, but they have a lifestyle that someone else finds different from their own.

Guess what? Everybody is different. Some maybe more than others in your eyes, but still just different.

Lose the blinders that keep you from seeing the positives that a worker has to offer and quit focusing on what distracts you. You may find a top employee and one who can spread the word that where they work, everyone is treated fairly and honestly.

That may help some of your recruitment problems as well.
