Shapiro files brief in support of ACA

Pennsylvania State Attorney General Josh Shapiro filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the Affordable Care Act.

In March, the Supreme Court agreed to hear an appeal to decide whether the Affordable Care Act should remain in place. Amicus briefs are legal documents filed in appellate court cases by non-litigants with a strong interest in the subject matter. The briefs advise the court of relevant, additional information or arguments that the court might wish to consider.

The Supreme Court also accepted a cross-appeal by Texas and other states opposing the ACA asking that the law be invalidated. The court will issue its decision this fall or next year.

“Americans have a right to accessible health care — that’s the law of the land,” Shapiro said. “My office was just before the Supreme Court defending women’s right to contraceptive health care under the ACA and we will continue to fight for all Americans’ access to affordable, quality health care. I won’t let this Administration destroy the ACA benefits that are guaranteed under law.”
