Man flown to hospital after crash

Emergency crews assist at a three-vehicle crash on Route 68 on Friday morning. One man was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital by medical helicopter.

A three-vehicle crash Friday morning on Route 68 between Butler and Chicora sent one man to a Pittsburgh hospital by medical helicopter.

Chief Gary Wulff with Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department said the crash occurred around 8 a.m. in the area of 864 Chicora Road, also known as Route 68 east.

The man transported to Pittsburgh was eastbound on Chicora Road driving a Jeep when he rear-ended a vehicle stopped for construction — tipping off a chain-reaction crash involving two additional vehicles.

Wulff said a crew from PennDOT was doing road maintenance in the area and had limited traffic to one-lane with signs warning motorists traveling in both directions. The Jeep struck a Ford SUV, which then hit a pickup.

The male driver of the Ford SUV was transported by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital.

The driver transported to Pittsburgh suffered head and chest injuries. Wulff said the Jeep's air bags did not deploy.

According to Wulff, a local nurse was driving the pickup and was following a fellow nurse in the vehicle in front of her. Both women immediately rendered aid to the victims in SUVs behind them until emergency personnel arrived on the scene.

About 10 volunteers from Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Butler Ambulance and East Butler Ambulance as well as a medical helicopter assisted at the scene.

Chicora Road was closed for 30 minutes and reopened to traffic with PennDOT crews resuming work shortly after 9 a.m. State police were also on scene investigating the crash. No names were released.
