Butler Road Race goes virtual
No awards ceremony. No official results. No crowded starting line on Main Street.
But the Butler Road Race runs on.
The 45th annual BRR — originally slated for June 20 — will not be held in its usual format due to the COVID-19 outbreak. This year's race will be done virtually.
Participants may run the 5-mile or 2K portion of the race — or both — on their own and submit their results between June 20-30 by emailing Christina Dreher at cdreher@bcfymca.org.
“There is so much tradition and history to this event,” said Dreher, Butler Family YMCA Development Specialist. “We wanted to find a way to allow the community to still come together and thrive with it.”
The registration fee is $20 for either the 5-mile or 2K race. Kids ages 12 and under can run the 2K for $10. A results form will be available on the YMCA website for runners to submit their name, race, pace and age.
Results will be compiled and posted by the YMCA, per age division and race, just like every year. Only no awards will be presented.
“Since the results won't be official, we can't definitively say who the winners actually are,” Dreher said. “People can run on trails, on tracks, up hills, whatever they choose.
“Someone might submit a time that was run on a trail on a rainy day. Someone else might submit a time run on a high school track on a sunny day. There are too many variables.”
The end goal?
Just run.
The 2019 Butler Road Race had approximately 500 runners and raised $17,000 for the YMCA Annual Support Campaign, which funds programs and services for children, families and seniors.
Dreher said BRR registration for this year has only been open for two days, yet 12 people have already registered.
As always, the BRR encourages competitive runners, casual runners, walkers and families to participate.
“It's all about getting out there as a community,” Dreher said. “Kids in strollers, dogs on leashes, everyone is welcome.”
The Y will feature runners on its social media pages over the next eight weeks. Participants are encouraged to tag the Y in their socoal media posts and use the hashtag #runButler to share their training and “race day” journey.
YMCA personal trainers will share tips and training plans exclusively with BRR participants.
“Our social media platform is a way to connect runners and provide some of that Road Race atmosphere,” Dreher said.
Registration is now open and available through June 30. T-shirts are guaranteed if registered by June 9.
Registration can be done at https://bcfymca.org/Butler-Road-Race. Dreher emphasized that 100 percent of the proceeds stay local.
