Former caregiver allegedly stole money

A former caregiver is accused of using the debit card of a Butler County couple to steal more than $300 last month.

State police Wednesday charged Bella R. Burk, 21, of Grove City with misdemeanor theft charges in the case.

Police said Burk was a home health care aide in April when she learned the personal identification number for the debit card belonging to the Prospect couple for whom she was working.

Burk's alleged victims, according to police, were a 53-year-old woman suffering from a terminal illness and a 60-year-old man who is visually impaired.

“The victims were both reliant on Burk for everyday help and care,” according to charging documents.

The defendant allegedly stole the card while shopping with one of the victims April 20 at a store in Butler Township.

“Burk was caught on (security) camera at multiple locations throughout Butler and Mercer (counties),” a police report said, “making withdrawals from convenience store ATMs using the victims' debit card.”

In all, police said, she stole $319.50. Trooper Noah Sims noted the defendant has avoided contacting him about his investigation.

Burk is charged with theft by unlawful taking, theft by deception and access device fraud. A preliminary hearing at the office of District Judge Bill O'Donnell in Slippery Rock was not immediately scheduled.
