Butler Township extends tax payment deadlines

BUTLER TWP — Township commissioners Monday extended the payment deadlines for real estate and business privilege taxes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Commissioners unanimously voted to extend the deadline to pay 2019 real estate taxes at face value without interest or penalties to Nov. 30 from the original deadline of June 30.

Manager Tom Knights said the move aligns the township payment deadline with the deadline approved by the county commissioners in April.

The deadline to pay 2019 business privilege taxes was extended to July 15 from May 15.

Business owners still are required to file their business privilege tax returns by May 15, but the commissioners extended the deadline to pay without interest or penalty.

The commissioners also approved waiving penalties and interest payments for business owners who are up to four years in arrears in business privilege taxes if they pay the taxes by July 15.

In addition, the commissioners instructed Knights to file a formal protest about a proposed rate increase by Pennsylvania American Water with the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission.

Pennsylvania American Water is asking the PUC for a rate increase that would total 11.88 percent over two years, Commissioner Fred Vero said.

In other business, Waste Management reported that it collected 14,225 pounds of recyclable materials during the first quarter of the year, Knight said. The materials included 9,471 TVs, about 1,000 pounds in electronics such as computer equipment and 1,118 pounds of latex paint.

Dave Zarnick, commissioner's chairman, said cameras have been installed along McCalmont Road and Old Plank Road in hopes of catching people who have been illegally dumping mattresses, furniture and other items.
