Giving tree provides masks
A little tree in Saxonburg is providing big benefits for area residents.
Melinda Berzonski, owner of Saxonburg Coffee and Tea on Main Street, has placed a “giving tree” in a barrel under the tent near her takeout window where fabric masks have been hung.
The public is welcome to take a free mask so they can abide by coronavirus pandemic protocol as they traverse the borough and surrounding areas.
Berzonski said she came up with the idea with her friend, a Winfield Township woman who wants to remain anonymous as she creates the masks in her home.
“People have taken approximately 40 masks so far,” Berzonski said Friday.
She does not take the tree inside when her take-out business closes for the day so anyone can get a mask at any time of the day or night.
The cloth masks are made from T-shirt material or other fabric, and are cut so they attach by loops that go around the ears.
“We're just trying to help people get masks,” Berzonski said. “Not everyone can sew.”
The tree will remain at Saxonburg Coffee and Tea as long as necessary.
“I have no plans to take it down,” Berzonski said.
She hopes to not only provide masks for those who don't have one, but to bring folks out to Main Street so they can patronize the businesses that remain open for curbside or takeout service.
“Come out and support your community and if you need a mask, get one from our giving tree,” Berzonski said.
