Butler man, 22, jailed after stabbing

Victim wounded twice, in hospital

A 22-year-old Butler man is behind bars after police say he admitted striking another man with a knife during a fight in the city's Island neighborhood.

David N. Demharter is accused of stabbing Jacob R. Trinkley, 22, of Slippery Rock, in the side of the chest and the groin late Monday at South Chestnut and Shore streets, where Butler police later found blood.

Police said they learned of the incident about 12:20 a.m. Tuesday after they were called to Butler Memorial Hospital, where Trinkley was dropped off with two stab wounds.

Nearly four hours later, according to investigators, Demharter called 911 and eventually spoke to police, telling them he struck the victim with a knife.

He was arraigned on felony and misdemeanor assault charges, and placed in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bond.

Trinkley is recovering at a Pittsburgh hospital, authorities said, with injuries — stab wounds to the left rib cage and left groin — not believed to be life threatening.

Police said video from city surveillance cameras aided their investigation. Footage between 11:44 and 11:50 p.m. Monday apparently showed the altercation leading to Demharter's arrest.

Trinkley is seen walking up to a large group of males and females at South Chestnut and Shore streets, where he and an unknown male “squared up in a fighting motion,” according to charging documents.

The unknown male, later identified as the suspect, in the footage appeared to be “swinging an object at Trinkley, as if trying to stab him,” investigating officer Patrolman Michael Sulerud said in his affidavit.

Moments later, police said, Trinkley and others in the group can be seen retreating south on South Chestnut Street, and the victim lifting up his shirt as if he was checking on stab wounds on his side.

During their investigation, officers went to the intersection and found “droplets of blood” on the street.

At 4:08 a.m. Tuesday, investigators said, Demharter called 911 and asked to speak to city police about a fight the previous night. When police returned the call, Demharter allegedly described being in an altercation and stabbing another man.

Police went to Demharter's apartment, and he agreed to go to the station with officers for an interview. He admitted that he and Trinkley engaged in a fight.

“Demharter stated during the course of the fight,” according to Sulerud's affidavit, “he was holding a knife and struck Trinkley with the blade.”

Online court records did not list an attorney for Demharter. His preliminary hearing is set May 11.
