Butler County’s jobless rate rose to 5.5 percent in March, a 1.2 percentage point increase from the February rate of 4.3 percent, according to figures released Wednesday by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment figures are from the “key week,” which includes the 12th of every month. For March, that was March 8 to 14, which was before state government-mandated business closures.
Butler’s increase was standard across the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area, where joblessness rose to 6 percent.
More than 1.6 million Pennsylvanians filed for unemployment compensation between March 15 and April 28. An additional 121,883 filed for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance between April 18 and April 28.
