U.S. Customs agents seize counterfeit Roku remotes

Devices on way to Butler County

U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Pittsburgh seized $80,000 worth of counterfeit Roku remotes that were heading for a Butler County address Sunday.

According to the agency, some 1,600 remotes featuring the Roku trademark arrived April 13 from China and were headed to Butler County. Those remotes would have sold for about $80,000 if they were authentic, officials said, estimating a Roku remote's value at $50. Roku is a brand of smart TVs and adapters that can bring streaming functionality to normal TVs.

A Customs and Border Protection spokesman said he couldn't say where in Butler County the remotes were heading, nor could he confirm if it was to a commercial address.

The remotes were seized as part of the agency's Intellectual Property Rights enforcement program, which monitors for the importation of counterfeit merchandise.

“Customs and Border Protection officers remain committed to protecting the intellectual property rights of businesses while protecting consumers against potentially harmful counterfeit products,” said Kathleen Killian Schafer, the agency's acting director for the Port of Pittsburgh, said in a news release Tuesday. “Consumers should be aware that counterfeit goods pose a health and safety threat and should protect their families by purchasing safe, authentic goods from reputable vendors.”

While the agency doesn't believe the remotes could have posed a “health and safety” threat to users, officials said they could easily break and not offer a “full inventory” of commands an authentic Roku remote would offer.

The enforcement program seized $4.3 million worth of products a day nationwide in 2019, compounding to more than $1.5 billion worth during the full year. About 66 percent of the market worth of the seizures came from goods manufactured in China.
