A 22-year-old Butler man is behind bars after being arrested Tuesday in connection to an early morning stabbing in the city.

David Demharter, 22, is charged with felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor simple assault. He is being held in the Butler County Prison awaiting arraignment.

According to a press release issued by Butler City Police Chief Bob O'Neill, Demharter was charged with the alleged stabbing of a 22-year-old Slippery Rock man during a fight that occurred shortly before midnight at the intersection of Chestnut and Shore Streets.

Officers opened the investigation after being called to Butler Memorial Hospital around 12:20 a.m. The victim arrived there with two stab wounds, one of which was a serious wound to his abdomen. The victim was later transported to a UPMC hospital in Pittsburgh, and the O'Neill reports the wounds are non-life threatening.

O'Neill wrote in his press release that the investigation led officers to check video surveillance footage near the crime scene that showed a group of people assembled at the intersection and a fight broke out between Demharter and the victim.

Demharter allegedly struck the victim at least two times with a knife, O'Neill said in the report, adding that "The fight stopped as (the victim) checked his wounds and all parties scattered from the area."

O'Neill said Demharter called investigators and made arrangements to be picked up early Tuesday morning and spoke with authorities before being taken into custody.
