Diocese announces changes

The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh has announced limited public celebration of certain sacraments in accordance with the government’s plans to gradually reopen communities and economies.

Bishop David Zubick said in a news release that the following changes are effective immediately:

Weddings including 10 people or fewer may be celebrated in exceptional circumstances. Couples are advised that the sacrament of matrimony cannot be repeated later. Couples wishing to celebrate in the future with more than 10 people can plan a Mass of Thanksgiving.

Funerals with a Mass may be scheduled in exceptional circumstances with fewer than 10 people. Cemeteries will remain closed for public interments until restrictions are lifted.

Confessions may be celebrated outdoors, either in parking lots or another place where social distancing guidelines are respected. The Sacrament of Penance cannot be celebrated inside any building.

Church buildings will remain closed and public Mass cannot be celebrated at this time.

Carrying out the new directives will be at the discretion of parish administrators, who will communicate with families to determine the best way to assist parishioners with their needs.

Parishioners can contact their pastor with questions.

All state, local and federal guidelines will continue to be observed for the protection and safety of the faithful.
